Yaquina Head Light
Yaquina Head Light
Today was one of the most spectacular bike touring days ever. I left The campground around 8 a.m. and stopped at the Yaquina Head light a few miles later. The lighthouse was closed. But, I got to see a lot of shore birds nesting on the surrounding cliffs.

Next, I passed through Newport, a typical beach town. I stopped at the Yaquina Bay lighthouse. I crossed a large bridge exiting Newport.

The long climb up Cape Perpetua
The long climb up Cape Perpetua
The road stayed relatively flat until I reached Cape Perpetua. Here the really magnificent scenery began. I climbed up the side of several cliffs. Climbing slowly next to the guardrail, I gazed over the edge to the beaches and rocks below. As I began my descent I stopped at the Devil's Churn, a large chasm in the rocks where the surf crashes into the narrow opening. The thing had to 200 yards long. Next I stopped at the Cape Perpetua Interpretative center where I viewed several exhibits about the natural history of the area.

Devils Churn

Devils Churn. The scale in the photo is deceiving. Note the people standing on the right side of the photo (look for the blue specs). The chasm continues at least another 100 to 200 feet beyond the right edge of the photo.

Overlooking the Oregon Dunes

I descended to the sea and soon began climbing up Heceta Head. I passed over a bridge and tunnel. The fog rose up the cliff face like steam from a teakettle. All the while I am climbing with the sun on my back. I slammed on the brakes several times on the descent to take pictures of the magnificent landscape overlooking the Oregon Dunes.

I passed through Florence where I bought a steak, potato salad and two ears of corn for supper. It was yummy!

There are several cyclists in camp tonight; Sirka the German woman I met yesterday at Beverly Beach, Pete, an English bloke, riding North from San Francisco to Vancouver and couple I have not spoken to yet.

I can't wait to show you the pictures I took today. Today was awesome!

Today's total is 67.50 miles.
