Seattle to San Francisco
Day 2 McCleary, to Twin Harbors State Park, WA

The road to Montesano
The Road to Montesano
I awoke up around 5:30 a.m. and was on the road around 7:15 in a light fog. I hoped to have another high mileage day. I stopped for breakfast in Montesano. It was there that I realized that I was still tired from my long ride yesterday. I decided today's ride would be much shorter.

The fog lifted by the time I got to Central Park. I stopped and put on sunscreen.

A few miles later, I arrived in Aberdeen. I saw someone spray painted Kurt Cobain's name on the side of a building. Cobain was from Aberdeen. I stopped to consult my maps and guide books. A light rain started falling. My new motto for this trip is, "If you want rain, prepare for sun."

Tsunami Evacuation Route
Tsunami Precautions
I saw these tsunami warnings along the Washington and Oregon coasts. There is a major fault line running north to south about 70 miles off the Pacific coast. Geologists fear that an undersea earthquake along this fault will trigger tsunamis.

Out of Aberdeen I picked up Highway 105 which took me due east into a headwind.

Fresnel Lens at Westport

I arrived in Westport and decided that I would stay at nearby Twin Harbors State Park. I spent the afternoon exploring Westport on my bike. The Maritime Museum was interesting. They had a huge fresnel lens from a lighthouse on display. I watched a surfing competition.

I arrived at the campground office and saw a touring bike parked outside. Inside, a woman in a bike helmet was filling out paperwork. I stood behind her in the doorway astride my bike and said, "Only an idiot would travel by bicycle". Her name is Rose and we're staying in adjacent hiker-biker sites. She is a beginner cyclist also following the Kirkendell and Spring route. We compared notes and talked about bike touring in general.

Almost all of the cyclists on the Pacific Coast, including myself, carried the book "Bicycling the Pacific Coast" by Tom Kirkendall & Vicky Spring.

Hopefully I'll feel stronger tomorrow.

Today's distance is approximately 55 miles.
