Big Descent Near Fort Ross

Russian River

I left Salt Point State Park and continued climbing through the creek canyons south of fort Ross. I did a big climb about 500 feet above the beach. This stretch of road was absolutely incredible. I descended down these really crazy switchbacks to the town of Jenner where I crossed the Russian River.

I continued down the coast to Bodega Bay. Alfred Hitchcock came to Bodega Bay to film The Birds in 1963. I stopped for a really nice lunch. While eating lunch, I saw several seals swimming across the harbor.

From Bodega Bay, the road turned through the dry brown hills of Marin County. I encountered a detour that turned me into some nasty headwinds near the town of Tomales. From here the road descended to Tomales Bay along the San Andreas Rift.

I picked up groceries in Point Reyes Station. A few miles later left the "1" for Sir Francis Drake Blvd. I am camped in redwoods about 28 miles from San Francisco. There are lots of cyclists here tonight ranging in age from 20 to 65. Lots of good folks. I enjoyed good conversation on the last day of my trip.

Tomorrow I cross the Golden Gate Bridge and bring this epic journey to an end. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience.
