Seattle to San Francisco
Day 13 Marin Garden Club Grove to
Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, CA

Cathy and I rode together all day today. We continued down the Avenue of the Giants. We stopped for breakfast in the small town of Meyers Flats.

I just love riding in the redwoods. These trees are so beautiful.

After a while we returned to the 101. This highway was a freeway for most of its length and in certain sections the shoulder was very narrow or non-existent. Let me tell you, riding on a freeway with no shoulder is SCARY!

We got off the 101 on Benbow Road and again on the 271.

I should note that we've been following the Eel River inland. We didn't see the ocean all day.

We stopped at Garberville. Cathy accessed her web based E-mail at the local library and I found a pay phone to do my PocketMail thing. After that, we got some pizza at this funky little restaurant with lots of old signs hanging on the walls. We saw a lot of "hippie" type characters as we were leaving town.

Back on the 101, we started gaining some serious elevation. We had some steep hills and the conditions on the 101 were not the best.

We arrived at Standish-Hickey around 5:30. Tom and Cheri showed up about 1/2 hour later. Another guy, Shannon, on a loop ride out of San Francisco is here also.

Cathy and I bought groceries and supplies across the street from the camping area. While in the store this 60-something year old lady behind the counter starts telling Cathy and I how she shot herself in the boob while fooling around with a pistol. Then she pulled down her already low cut shirt and showed us the wound! Gee Toto, I guess we're not in Massachusetts anymore.

Tomorrow I tackle the infamous Leggett Hill. This is the biggest hill on the Pacific Coast route. It rises over 2000 feet above sea level. I am determined to do lots of miles tomorrow to guarantee that I make San Francisco by Monday.

Today's total 51 Miles.
