Day 10 Cape Split
|
Thunderstorms
woke me during the night. Fortunately, I stayed nice and dry
in my tent. I awoke in the morning to a foggy misty day.
I
departed my campsite without the BOB or any equipment. I
descended approximately 10 miles to the small village of Scotts Bay.
The road ended at the Cape Split trailhead.
Cape
Split is a fishhook shaped peninsula sticking out into the Bay of
Fundy. It is only accessible by boat or the hiking trail. |

Cape Split Trail
|
I
took off my bike shoes and put on sneakers. I hiked through the lush
vegetation. I could not hear or see the ocean.

Cape Split
|
I
suddenly emerged from the forest. A great precipice dropped
away from me on three sides. I was all alone in a surreal
setting. The fog, the mist and the sound of the surf made me
feel like I was in a movie. I walked along the cliff edge.
I found a campsite with some equipment. I wasn't alone after
all.
|
|
I
found a route down to the bottom of the cliffs. I walked a
short way along the shore line. I didn't stray far however.
The local people had warned me to be careful. The 40 foot
Fundy tide rises fast.

Rocks worn smooth by tidal currents
|
These
algae covered rocks pictured at the left were worn smooth by the
tidal currents. I was very careful of my footing. I
envisioned my self being trapped by the incoming tide against the
cliff face being unable to walk to due a broken leg or ankle.
|
I
walked back to the top of the cliffs. At the top, I saw the two
campers walking along the shoreline 300 feet below.
I
hiked back to my bike. A light rain started falling as I arrived at
the trailhead. I rode back to the Lookoff in the rain.
| On
the way I passed the government wharf at Scotts Bay (pictured on the
right). Note the vertical distance between the high water mark
on the wharf and the water level in the picture. |

Low Tide at the Bay of Fundy
|
I arrived back at
the campground. I didn't feel like cooking outdoors in the rain. I
enjoyed a nice meal at the restaurant located near the campground.
After dinner I
showered, washed and dried my soggy clothes in the campground laundromat.
I spent the rest of the evening reading in my nice dry tent.
My total mileage
for the day was 19.8
